BY CAR/ MOTORBIKE
Driving from London to Athens (and taking the Ferry from
Italy to Greece) at a normal pace takes around 3 and a half days. Make sure you have
your driving license and are properly insured to cover Europe. It is also worth checking
other regulations regarding driving through Europe. e.g. always carry a warning triangle
with you, spare light bulbs etc.
It is well worth planning your route carefully- many roads through Europe carry a toll and
your journey can end up to be quite expensive.
The Greek Automobile Club
(ELPA) operates a breakdown
service within 60Km of Athens and Patras: dial 104. If you belong to an automobile club at
home, breakdown service is free anywhere.
Motorbikes are great fun and wonderful in the Greek
climate-but it would be advisable to take your own. Even then you must be aware that the
roads are rough and often slippy in the wet. Expect the unexpected - there can
be lots of gravel on corners, goats, pigs - you name it, you could encounter it. So ride
carefully. Helmets must be worn by law but few Greeks abide by it. However be
warned - some islands are beginning to enforce this law.
If you hire a bike or moped - do check it out. The Greeks
are notorious for their lack of maintenance. Check brakes, oil and essentials before
leaving the hire shop. There are one or two unscrupulous dealers who offer comprehensive
insurance but only give you third party - so ask around and get the best deal.
Above all - ride safe!
