SUPERMARKETS
You can find supermarkets in most villages which stock nearly everything you need.
Most of the shop keepers speak English and its well worth having a good look around as
you'll be surprised at the variety of stuff they sell. Teabags and instant coffee are
available most everywhere. Fresh milk is produced locally and Feta cheese and yogurts are
bountiful - so why not give those a try - they are truly delicious. Bread is usually found
at the bakery though some supermarkets do keep a small amount - but you have to be early.
KIOSKS
Known as the "Periptero" these kiosks sell cigarettes, lighters, drinks, ice
cream, films, newspapers, tissues, books, magazines, telephone cards, condoms, chocolate,
stamps, post cards - and all sorts of things. The advantage is that they tend to stay open
when the shops are closed.
PHARMACIES
Pharmacies are open Monday and Wednesday 8am-2,30pm. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8am-1pm
and 5-8pm and Saturday 8am-1pm. There is also a duty rosta so that at least one is
open in the vicinity on Saturday and Sunday. Look on the shop door for further
information.
POSTAL SERVICES
Post Offices open on weekdays from 7.30-2pm. They are closed on Saturday and Sunday.
Stamps can often be purchased from the kiosks and many tourist shops and supermarkets.
GIFT SHOPS
There are gift shops all over the island - some specializing in jewelry, others ceramics
but many sell a wide selection of interesting gifts to take home. You can also find maps,
suncream, films - even umbrellas. There will also be a service for developing films if you
don't want to wait til you return home before seeing your photographs.
There are factories selling directly to the public and pottery is on show in most
gift shops. Another quality local product is embroidered linen and crochet work. Don't
forget to watch out for the people on the side of the road selling home made wine and
honey- a delicious treat.
