Post, Phones and the Internet in Kefalonia

Post
In Kefalonia and the Ionian Islands post offices open Monday through Friday between 7:30 am and 2pm though main branches (such as the one in Argostoli) often open in the evening and on Saturday mornings. An airmail letter will take somewhere between three to seven days to get to the rest of the Europe and from five to twelve days to get to America. Postal rates for anything up to 20g are o.7 euros no matter where it is being sent to. You can also get stuff sent quicker via an express service (katepigonda) that costs 3 euros.

The Post boxes on the island are bright yellow, although there are also darker red boxes for express mail. If you are in a hurry to get something sent however it is best to send stuff using the boxes next to the post office – otherwise your mail might sit there for days. When using a post box you will see two slots; one labeled ‘Esoteriko’ which is for domestic mail and one labeled ‘Exoteriko’ which is for overseas and will most likely be the one you are after.

Phones
Most people take their mobiles on holiday these days and Kefalonia is no exception. Mobiles are used all over the island now and the coverage is quite good – perfect in the larger resorts. However, always remember to set up roaming coverage with your network provider otherwise you could end up racking up massive charges. Try to only use your mobile for emergencies whilst on holiday and whatever you do don’t go online via your mobile – the data charges will be horrific.

When it comes to pay phones there are a number scattered all over the island and several in each of the main resorts. Normally they will be on the corner of a street or by a supermarket. They nearly all take phone-cards which you buy at the mini-market or supermarket and they will inevitably be a lot cheaper to use than your mobile.
