Getting Here – By Plane

The easiest way to get to Kefalonia is through a package holiday deal that includes your hotels (or villas) and flights (you can find great package holiday deals by using the search box on the right hand side of this site). Most large UK airports have flights to Kefalonia in the summer and they normally leave on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Flights take about three hours.

If you decide to travel independently and book everything yourself rather than go through a tour operator (and this is sometimes worth doing because it saves money) then it is possible to book direct charter flights to Kefalonia. Again, these fly regularly from most of the major airports, on the same days as above and can be arranged either online or through your local travel agency.

In 2012 it was also announced that budget airline Easyjet is to begin flights between London and Kefalonia twice a week during peak season (April to October). They will also run a service from Milan to Kefalonia twice a week from July through to September. (Details at http://www.easyjet.com/en/cheap-flights/Kefalonia/London-Gatwick.)

Finally there are also two flights a day between Athens and Kefalonia (with Olympic Airlines) if you are flying in from anywhere else in the world or flying to Athens from the UK. These cost 75 Euros and also offer connections to Corfu and Zakynthos. Details can be found at www.olympicairlines.com.

It is worth noting that airlines now have to compensate you if your flight suffers a delay of over a few hours. This compensation can range from food and drink for shorter delays to full or partial flight refunds if the delay is more serious and the flight is canceled. There is a useful article on flight compensation on the Readies.co.uk website that gives details of the compensation available and procedures involved in making a claim. The article suggests that any delay of 3 hours or more may result in compensation of some sort so its worth a read before you fly so that you know your rights should an issue occur.
