Public Transport on Kefalonia

Kefalonia is a beautiful island and has everything going for it – everything except a great public transport system and consequently most visitors who want to explore the island hire a car. There are taxis available in most resorts although seeing the sights of the island would be too much money if done using taxis alone. However, when you arrive at Kefalonia airport you’ll probably need to get a taxi into Argostoli, which will cost you around 10 Euros. Argostoli is the capital of the island and the one place that has anything approaching a regular bus service. The KTEL bus station is in the center of town and it runs regular (ish) services to other parts of the island. These buses are notorious for their unreliability however; their only advantage is that they are very cheap. Here are the times (and prices) for buses around Kefalonia:

If you are staying in one of the resorts you will most likely find that your hotel will organize minibus transfers for you to a number of destinations around the island.

However, as mentioned above the best way to get around the island is car hire. Not only is it cheap, it also allows you to get to parts of the island that no other service offers. Consequently if you are heading to Kefalonia in high season you should book well in advance as hire cars can go fast when the island is packed. Just remember that once you have the car, although the roads are traffic free and easy to navigate (with signposts in English) some of them are not in the best condition, with potholes and steep inclines, random dogs and goats wandering around; some of the higher mountain roads are probably best approached with a 4×4 too.

Finally there is also a regular ferry that will take you from Argostoli to Lixouri. Departures (and return trips) are every 30 minutes in summer.
